Nature Study with Nature Anatomy

When I first started implementing Charlotte Mason’s methods in our school, I was most excited about doing nature studies. But honestly, I had no clue where to start. So I got on Pinterest (my go-to) and searched, “nature studies.” So many posts popped up! It was crazy! But, then I came across Nature Anatomy. The book’s illustrations were gorgeous!! So I immediately ordered a copy! And now I love doing Nature Study with Nature Anatomy!

What can I find inside Nature Anatomy?

So many topics are covered in Nature Anatomy.

  • Trees
  • leaves
  • volcanoes
  • birds
  • phases of the moon
  • snowflakes
  • clouds
  • constellations
  • frogs
  • jellyfish
  • mushrooms
  • worms
  • fossils
  • minerals
  • weather
  • insects
  • and a lot more!

There is usually one project at the end of each section or chapter.

For example, the project for the first section of chapter 4 is leaf printing.

Now What??

When I got the book, I was so excited, but I still had no clue how to implement it. I needed a game plan. So I started out by buying some sketch pads for each child to use during nature study. (They were cheaper to purchase on Amazon than our local Wal-Mart or Target.)

Then we just went with the flow. I tried to pick out relevant topics for the time of the year.

You don’t want to be studying flowers in the middle of December when there are no flowers to look at.

Snowflakes in December would be more appropriate for our area. We really just take it one day at a time.

Nature study is something that I do not recommend scheduling. It works bests when you let the topic come to you.

Nature Journal

I decided to make some Nature Journaling Pages for each chapter that we can quickly put into a binder. (Those big sketch pad papers are hard to fit in a binder or notebook, and I really didn’t want to leave them in the sketchpad.)

And since it is Fall, this is the perfect time for a study on leaves and trees!! It’s also the perfect weather for some fun hikes with the family.

Hence Chapter 4: Take a Hike.

We started with bugs.

My kids were on a huge bug kick this Summer. They turned over every single rock they could to find all the snails, slugs, and whatever other creepy crawlers that were under there.

My son found a praying mantis in our backyard which led us to an entry in our journals.

We also had some butterflies and bees that loved the flowers in our front yard. That was a fun impromptu study!

We love Nature Anatomy

We have really enjoyed using Nature Anatomy in our homeschool this year. I am so glad that I made the purchase. It is an excellent resource for nature studies. It gets my kids super excited about the topic, and then we end up reading more books about the topic and watching videos on YouTube and Netflix.  I definitely recommend this book for anyone’s home library!

  1. Hi, I Stumbled upon you on Pinterest. Enjoyed this post. How I wish you and pinterest were around 20 years ago. I was attempting to homeschool my kids Charlotte Mason style with a handful of books explaining the style but not actually showing how to implement it, which is what the visual learner in me desperately needed. I’m so thankful that the internet has come so far and for those of you who take the time to document, show, and guide others, making it a little easier to succeed at the most important job- parenting… Thank you, Tonyia

  2. Hi! Firstly thank you for sharing these! They look wonderful and exactly what we need, unfortunately I haven’t received the email with the full dienload and I can only find Chapter 1,2 & 4 in the shop and not anything more. We would love to be able to use your pages but there must be something wrong with sending the mail as I even triend a different e-mail address without success. Is there any other way that I will be able to get Chaptets 3,5,6,7?
