Teaching Science using living books is an awesome way to get your child engaged. Especially with the ones who may not love Science so much. Reading about it in a story format can really help. Last year, I came across Elemental Science: Sassafras Science Adventures, and I decided to order it. I am so glad that I did!! It has not disappointed. If you want a good, exciting book to read to your kids, this is it!

What is Sassafras Science Adventures?

Elemental Science: Sassafras Science Adventures
is a curriculum that is written in the form of a living book. There are 5 volumes covering different areas of study. The books are written in story format. You follow Blaine and Tracy Sassafras on an exciting adventure. Confession: I even find myself saying ” I’ve got to see what happens next.” We are halfway through Volume 1. I can’t wait to read the rest…. I mean the kids…the kids can’t wait!

Zoology Vol 1

In the first Volume, Zoology, they zip around the world.. literally on a Zipline.. and collect data on different animals. They then enter it into a Scidat (science data) log book.

How does this teach science?

The books weave science facts throughout this interesting adventure. It’s designed to read a chapter per week. (The chapters are relatively long.) After each reading, you can fill out the optional Scidat Logbook. I highly recommend using the logbook.
