1 Simple Rule to Motherhood
I came across this quote today: Motherhood is not a hobby, It is not something you do if you can squeeze the time in, It is what God gave you time for. – Neil L. Anderson
Distractions in a modern-day world
Our world is so full of distractions. There are so many things at your fingertips to keep you occupied. We have internet. Not only on our computer at home, but on our phones that we carry around in our pockets and purses. If we don’t catch ourselves, we are checking our phone constantly to see what’s new on Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter, and Instagram. We have placed these things at the top of our priority list without even realizing it.
How many times have you been to the park and seen mothers scrolling on their smartphones? All the while their child is playing alone 10 feet away with no one to really watch him. I have seen it so many times. I have seen mothers on their phone while their child is desperately trying to get their attention, but mom can’t seem to take her eyes of that screen.
I am not condemning anyone… I have caught myself many times picking up my phone to look, when I really should be spending quality time with my kids. Tell me, though… Just how important is that Facebook notification?? How important are our children?
What does the Bible say about children?
When you look in the Bible, you find out what God says about children. He calls them blessings. He tells us that having children is a great honor and privilege.
“Lo, children are an heritage of the Lord: and the fruit of the womb is his reward.” Psalm 127:3 (KJV)
That is how I know, that God really has given us time for our children. It is us who fill up our schedules with so many tasks. We keep ourselves so busy and distracted that we are wasting that precious time with our children that God has granted us. My grandma (who mothered 8 children) always said that God saw that she needed a bit of sunshine in her life, so he gave her children. What a beautiful way to look at being a mother. Instead of viewing our children as troublesome burdens that suck our bank accounts dry (as media and modern society often portrays them), we can view them as beautiful rays of sunshine given to us by God to brighten our days.
So …. What is the 1 Simple Rule to Motherhood?
It is simply this: Make Time For Your Children.
Don’t let yourself get so wrapped up in your phone, your job, your finances, your problems…. These things are so easy to do in the time that we live in.
God has given you time for your children… use it. Take your children to the park. Take them to see a movie. Take them to get some ice cream. Or, simply stay at home and play with them. Wrestle in the floor, sit down for a chat, or let them help you cook. There are so many ways to spend time with your children, and so many wonderful things we can teach them along the way. This is one of the many reasons that I homeschool my children… so I can spend some good quality time with each of them every day, and instill Godly values in their lives.

The other day I was wrapped up in some work that I was needing to do around the house, but all of a sudden I felt a gentle nudge from God to spend some time with my kids. So we all packed up and went for some ice cream, and you know what my son said? He said, “This was fun Mom, when can we do this again??”
It really is the simplest things that make children the happiest. You would be surprised what investing a little time in your children can do!
I challenge you to set some time aside for your children this week. Do something special with them. It doesn’t have to be anything huge, but do something that you know they will enjoy. Let me know what you chose to do with your child(ren) in the comments!
