Spring Nature Study Ideas

Spring Nature Study Ideas

Spring is a great time to get outdoors and explore! The weather has been a little bit crazy this Spring, but we have taken advantage of all the warm days by spending them outdoors. Since we are done with school for the year, our Spring Nature Study will be very informal. We will be taking a ton of nature walks, and casually taking in Spring. Here are some things we will be checking out this Spring.

Spring Nature Study Ideas

Blooming Flowers

The flowers are in bloom! This is the perfect time to watch a flower bud and then fully bloom. You can observe how long it takes for the flower bud to fully bloom, pick and dissect the flower, and find out which flowers bloom early. You can also dedicate this time to learning the names of your local flowers.

Tip: Make a list of flowers in your area to keep in your Nature Notebook.

Mushrooms

My family loves to go mushroom hunting for morels. This is a little bit of Nature Study in itself. (And we get to eat them!) We are teaching them which mushrooms are safe to pick and eat, and which ones are not. Early spring is when the mushrooms really start to pop out in our area.

Find out what mushrooms grow in your area and study those. Make a note of if they are safe to eat or not, and learn their names.

Trees

The trees are also going to be in bloom. This is a great time to observe the buds and forming of new leaves on trees. You can also do some bark rubbings, or start a dried flower collection.

Birds

We’ve seen a lot more birds out and about lately. A good time to watch them is right after a rain when they are looking for worms.

Tip: Make a list of local birds, and put it in your nature notebook.

Weather

Record what Spring weather is like in your area. You can do this by keeping a log of the weather over a period of time inside of your nature notebook. Ours would be quite interesting this year with the roller coaster weather we’ve been having! It just can’t decide if it really wants to be Spring yet.
