Can You Really Teach Your Child To Read In 100 Easy Lessons???

Is it possible to Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons? You know, at first, I was really skeptical of it. I mean, come on! How in the world am I going to teach my child to read in 100 lessons?!?! That is essentially 100 days. Just over a few months, and they should be reading at a 2nd-grade reading level.

Call me crazy, but it just seemed impossible. How could I accomplish 3 years of work (Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grade) in 3 months? But, despite feeling like it may be too good to be true, I bought the book anyway. And now, I can honestly say, I am so glad that I did!

How does it work?

Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons is comprised of … you guessed it… 100 easy lessons. (They really are easy.) The lessons last for 15-20 minutes per day, and they are scripted. All of the words you will say to your child are written in red. (Open and go!! Score!)

They use the DISTAR method to teach reading. The program is for preschool-aged children through 1st grade or more who have not yet learned how to read.

I began this book with my oldest daughter at the age of 3 because she saw her older brother doing it, and wanted to join in. Sounds a little early for reading, but she picked it up in no time at all. By the age of 4, she was reading well past a 2nd-grade reading level. I used this book until the pages started falling out! Then I bought a new (used) copy for my now 1st grader.

How is it different from other programs?

Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons is phonics-based. There is no reading by sight done in this book. It introduces new sounds throughout the book. They start off with very basic sounds and begin reading short words by the 3rd lesson. By lesson 13 they read their first short story. Which is really just 1 sentence. The stories get progressively longer throughout the book, and the words get more challenging.

I started using a different curriculum for my son last year to teach him how to read. (It was a more traditional approach) We literally made it nowhere in an entire school year! So, I switched back to Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons. I have seen a HUGE improvement in his reading in a short amount of time. He is doing so well! I highly recommend this program!

Sidenote: The font used in the book seems a little strange. However, they will transition to a more normal font for reading towards the end of the book. I haven’t found this to be a problem at all.

Keeping Track of Lessons

I use a bookmark, of course, to keep our place in the book. But, I do have a little girl running around here that likes to grab the book and rip out the bookmarks. So, to make it a little bit easier on myself, I made a reading chart to keep track of which lesson we are on.

Affordability

This book is so inexpensive! Especially when you think about the fact that you can use it will all of your children. Reading and phonics programs can get pretty pricey, but you can’t beat the price on this one. I purchased mine on Amazon used the first time. (It fell apart pretty quickly) Then I purchased my 2nd one new on Amazon to make sure it last longer!

In the Future…

This book has been extremely successful for us, and I plan on using it for all of my children!
