10 AWESOME FALL NATURE STUDY IDEAS

I love Fall! It is my favorite season. The weather is awesome, the leaves are changing, and it is just an all around beautiful season. So, naturally, we spend a lot of time outside! There are days we like to just go outside, and let nature be our classroom.

10 AWESOME FALL NATURE STUDY IDEAS

We recently took a day off to go down to our local State Park. We walked one of our favorite trails. The mile-long walkway follows a creek down to a waterfall. The waterfall was not running, but it was still so beautiful there! The leaves on the trees were shades of yellows, reds, and oranges. It was like a magical fairytale land!

As my kids explored the creek, and walked around the base of the bluffs, I was inspired! So, I put together this list of Fall Nature Study ideas.

10 AWESOME FALL NATURE STUDY IDEAS

#1 NATURE WALKS

This is the most beautiful time of the year! Kids will notice all the vibrant colored leaves on the trees, and find plenty scattered on the ground. The cooler weather provides nice walking conditions too! So, take a hike, walk through the woods, or go to a park!

Here’s a great list of 100 Things to do Before, During, and After a Nature Walk

#2 FALL LEAF COLLECTION JOURNAL

Find leaves of all sizes, shapes, and colors. Bring them home, I.D.them, and put them in a photo album or use these no heat Laminating Sheets in a binder. The leaves can be collected each fall adding to your journal!

Here’s a really good idea on how to keep your Fall leaves looking pretty: Preserve Fall Leaves (Younger children will need help from an adult for this activity.)

#3 TREE IDENTIFICATION

We’ve been busy cutting firewood this Fall, so this seemed like a good fit for us! My husband takes the reigns in this one by telling them the names of each tree and how to identify it by it’s bark and leaves. If you need to, you can use the internet or a book for identifying trees as well. Don’t forget to let them do some sketches in their Nature Journals, too.

#4 WEATHER

Fall can bring all sorts of weather! Storms, rain, tornadoes, warm sunny days, or cool cloudy days. (At least in our area!) So, it can be the prime time to talk about all those things!

Nature Anatomy; Chapter 2: What’s Up?” covers storms, tornadoes, and the water cycle. Get the FREE journaling pages here.

#5 HIBERNATION

This is the perfect time to talk about hibernation! Which animals hibernate? How long does hibernation last?

#6  TIME CHANGES

Observe the shortening days. Discuss why it gets dark sooner.

Seasons are discussed in Ch. 1 of Nature Anatomy. Ch. 1 Common Ground.

#7 PUMPKINS

Visit your local Pumpkin Patch. Dissect a pumpkin, and observe the seeds. (You may already be doing this is you carve pumpkins or make home made pumpkin pie.) What is the best time of year to plant pumpkins and why?

#8 COLORS OF FALL

Use watercolors, oil pastels, chalk pastels, or whatever art medium you choose. Paint a picture using only Fall colors, make a collage, or create a Fall colors wheel.

#9 SCAVENGER HUNT

Look for things you may only find in fall. (Colorful leaves, acorns, etc.)

#10 BIRDS

Fall is still a great time to study birds! We live nearby a wildlife refuge, and today we saw a beautiful hawk flying above the house while we were outside!

Check out Chapter 6 in Nature Anatomy. It’s all about birds! Nature Anatomy Ch.3 A Little Bird Told Me Journaling Pages.

I also suggest reading The Burgess Bird Book for Children.
